
If there is one popular souvenir that captures the essence of what it represents, it is good ol’ bobbleheads. From its origins to the present day, their presence is felt across the board. But we are here to talk about how they have helped propel our medical marketing efforts—we dared think outside the box, and boy, did it pay off! A Brief History of Bobbleheads
Back in 1764, Johan Zoffany’s portrait of Queen Charlotte with her two eldest sons shows two Chinese nodding-head figurines in the background. Indeed, they had been imported to England, Europe, and America from Canton since the 1780s, when George VI’s England saw a surge in Chinese decorative patterns.
Fast forward to the 20th century, and we see 6-8 inch ceramic bobbleheads of animals produced in Germany. Their heads were connected to the body with a spring and were called “nodders” or “bobbers,” based on the way that their heads would bob.
Now in the 1960s, it gets juicy. Baseball and hockey teams produced paper-mâché bobbleheads to represent their players. They all shared the same face, but jerseys changed. Surprisingly, they were not originally a giveaway, but rather sold as souvenirs or merchandising, probably the brainchild of the geniuses in the marketing department 🤭.
Why, yes. To quote Richard Linklater, “Everybody wants some”…. Of what makes them happy. So, not only do Bobbleheads work because they are a representation of that which we enjoy (our favorite sports team), but because they make us happy! If anything, they are optimism encapsulated by their constant nodding.
